Recovery Media 1

The most common problem we are seeing at the moment is faulty recovery media (recovery disks).

When you purchase a new computer you will often be prompted to create a set of recovery disks or to back-up your system. A lot of people put this aside “I’ll do it later” or some don’t understand what’s involved and afraid it might lead to something catastrophic. In reality it is an easy task and could save you a bit of money when things go wrong.

The thing is, even if you do create recovery disks, there is no guarantee they are going to work. You don’t need to use them until it’s too late and your system has crashed. In the last month 75% of recovery media we’ve used has been faulty.

If you are not an IT Technician you probably won’t know what to do when things go pear shaped, even for us it presents a bit of a headache.

  • You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask for a set of new disks at a price!
  • You can get hold of a copy of the operating system you are using, re-install it, locate all of the drivers you need and install them too.
  • You can call a Computer Repair Company which will probably go down the second route. Here at Computech we usually charge £20-£30 for this and it can take an hour or two.

In the good old days when you bought a new computer it came with CD’s containing everything you needed to get back up and running. It was easy!

So, why have these big companies changed something that worked, to something that has become frustrating and in most cases a complete waste of time? What’s in it for them?

  • Is it money, in the hope that we will spend even more getting a new set of recovery disks sent out and being left without a PC for a day or three…
  • Maybe it’s just an honest mistake and they’re not capable of producing proper software that can actually write the recovery disks properly?
  • Perhaps there are hidden instructions somewhere that nobody can find and it’s actually us doing the wrong thing.

Well we are going to try and dig up some information on the issue, anyone have any idea where we can start? Have you had this problem?
